Argentina Part I- Buenos Aires

IMG_5379.JPG

On our first time in Buenos Aires we visited the city for my friends’ Sharon & Dan wedding! We couldn’t miss it for the world and now we are so thankful we got to explore this amazing city, country and got to learn about plentiful of exploring opportunities.

Buenos Aires is fascinating! It is full of identity and offer unlimited activities and places for any type of interest. Often called “porteño culture” the city’s location to the Rio de la Plata makes it a port and anyone born in Buenos Aires is usually referred to a porteño. Porteño culture is perhaps the most recognized aspect of argentines in the world’s community; however it is absolutely one page of the book.

Theres is the foodie aspect (for the non- vegetarian, let me warn), the arts, the historical richness and much more! The days there in between wedding events were certainly not enough for us to explore the city as we would have hope but it is definitely one of those you can fall in love with, at, and you will certainly want to come back to.

It can’t escape me to mention that in the current political-economic behavior of the pesos with respect to the dollar it is a great time to visit Argentina. Besides supporting the argentine economy it is a unique opportunity to get more bang for your buck!

Upon Arrival to the city we exchanged dollars to pesos at the Banco de la Nación booth within the airport.

Transportation

Taxi

When you run a good ol’ Goggle search you will learn that Buenos Aires has Uber. However, I will advise against it for now since there has been controversy between the online car sites and the taxi unions in the city. You might end up wasting your time, waiting for your uber to arrive( this also happened to us in Cartagena, Colombia. Instead, just use the city taxi’s which are reliable. They have yellow top and black bottom and have a “Libre” neon sign when available.

Buenos Aires Bus

We are against tourist traps and touristy things to do but this one is good advice for the sake of time and money! For about US$ 25 the bus will take you around the city’s landmarks and barrios ( neighborhoods). This hop on off bus has a variety of routes that connect the city. Buenos Aires is an autonomous gigantic city and this is an easy way to land yourself in terms of location and will provide perspective on what you will want to see the remainder of your stay. Food

Enter Argentine Asado the main protagonist of Buenos Aires food scene and its nose to tail characteristics deserve an entry itself. As a person living in America ( land of prime Angus steaks & quality meats) bovine gastronomy deserves a trip itself! Just ordering a Parrilla will usually include everyone’s favorites:

  • Mollejas

  • Chinchulines

  • Morcilla

  • Chorizo

  • Matambre

  • & many more!

“I will not order one per person if I were you. One parrilla is good for 2 or even 3 people.”

Dulce de Leche

I still get surprised when I find people who don’t know what dulce de leche is. But is you are one of them; yes it is similar to caramel but not quite the same thing. I want to give the title Buenos Aires, the capital of dulce the leche.

Spreading dulce de leche on just about any type of pastry that comes your way is a very argentine thing to do!

Choripan

I promise you it a lot more than just a chorizo between two pieces of bread with pickled sauce. I am warning right now. Pace yourself! We partner with our taxi drivers for advice all the time! They can truly be the best travel advisors! We asked ours to take us to “a good one”

Don Carlos Restaurant

At El Barrio de la Boca, just in one of the corners of the Estadio Boca Juniors or Bombonera; there is a small restaurant run by Don Carlos & his family. Anthony Bourdain featured this spot in one of the episodes of Parts Unknown about Buenos Aires. After watching the episode I was enchanted by the informal style of service of its owners.

Basically you need to ring a bell as the entrance. The owner “Don Carlos” seems to decide then if he has room or not for you as it is usually full or reserved for big party’s of people. We were very lucky to be admitted. there is no menu. He will start serving you a full course meal without disappointment one of the best meals we had in Argentina with a home-cooked feel too!

The menu this time :

  • Ensalada de Atún- Tuna Salas with mayonaise & potato

  • Provoleta- Provolone Cheese

  • Beef

  • Pork Chorizo

  • Flan con Dulce de Leche- I could translate but it doesn’t even come as close in tastefulness you have gotta take the trip!

  • Tiramisu

  • Several Ice Cold Quilmes

Places to visit

This is just a few of the spots we were able to cover. We are hoping to come back with many of you!

  • Recoleta

  • Recoleta Cemetery

  • Barrio La Boca

  • Caminito

  • Estadio Boca Juniors

  • Restaurant- Don Carlos

  • Restaurant- La Cabrera ( pricey for local standards but worth it! If you have an international traveled palate, this one is a must!)
